Level, graded and guaranteed-acceptance final expense plans

What to check before selecting a final expense policy.

Plan Types · Updated October 23, 2026

Level benefits

These policies usually ask health questions. Approval is not guaranteed. The full benefit may be available when coverage takes effect, subject to policy terms, exclusions and contestability.

Graded benefits

These policies limit benefits for natural-cause death during an initial period. The amount payable and length of that period vary by insurer. Ask for the benefit schedule in writing.

Guaranteed acceptance

These policies generally do not ask health questions, but age, residence and other eligibility requirements still apply. Availability is not guaranteed in every state. Initial natural-cause death benefits are commonly limited.

Before you buy

Verify the agent's license with your state insurance department. Review premiums, effective date, exclusions, waiting period, cancellation rights and lapse provisions. No plan is a government benefit.
