List the costs
Ask local funeral providers for itemized prices. Include cemetery charges, a marker, final medical bills and debts that would actually be payable by your estate. Family members are not automatically personally responsible for your debts.
Subtract money already set aside
Consider savings dedicated to these expenses, existing life insurance and prepaid arrangements. Do not count the same resource twice. If these resources cover your wishes, additional insurance may not be needed.
Review affordability
Choose a premium you can keep paying over time. Coverage may lapse if premiums are not paid. A licensed agent can explain available amounts, costs and policy limitations; this site does not provide quotes.
Check waiting periods
Level-benefit coverage may pay the full death benefit once coverage takes effect, subject to exclusions and contestability provisions. Graded and guaranteed-acceptance policies commonly limit natural-cause death benefits during an initial period, often two to three years. Read the actual policy.
